Chalky – Second Beach

Date posted: April 15, 2019

Chalky’s debut album ‘Second Beach’ is a triumph of immersive musicality taking you on a journey through his home town of Looe, Cornwall. The concept allows him to explore both his literal heritage as well as his musical heritage from a lifetime of music making. Having played extensively in punk bands and jazz groups alike, with electronic and hip-hop elements shining through at key moments, ‘Second Beach’ is a great primer for a musician who should be on everyone’s “one to watch” list.

The album is constructed from a dizzying variety of instruments which work together to create a string of unique musical moments, never twice repeating the same motif with the same arrangement. A large amount of the playing was done by Chalky himself showing off his talent not just as a guitarist but as a multi instrumentalist as well. Key guest spots are filled but wide array of musicians who are all connected to Chalky adding to the feeling of personal reflection the runs throughout. Having built the album himself from start to finish, Chalky worked closely with regular collaborator Sandy Finlayson (aka Seppa) to deliver the final mix and master. In a world full of singles, ‘Second Beach’ really deserves to be listened to from start to finish so turn the lights down and get comfortable, you won’t be disappointed.
