Dervish to headline St Ives September Festival

Date posted: August 19, 2019

Iconic Irish band Dervish, who are heading to the 2019 St Ives September Festival, will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at British folk music’s biggest night of the year.

Dervish, who have been bringing Irish traditional music to the world for 30 years, have played at festivals across the globe – from Rock In Rio to Glastonbury – as well as performing on The Great Wall of China.

Dervish, celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, will fittingly receive their award at the 20th Radio 2 Folk Awards, hosted by Mark Radcliffe, at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, on Wednesday October 16.

Before that they will headline at St Ives Guildhall on Friday, September 20 – the night after their new album The Great Irish Songbook is premiered with a special concert involving Imelda May, David Gray, Kate Rusby and actor Brendan Gleeson at the London Palladium.

Shane Mitchell, Dervish’s accordian player, said: “We are thrilled and so delighted to be receiving this very special honour at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, particularly as this is the 30th anniversary of the band.”

Meanwhile, Dervish – fronted by Cathy Jordan, one of Ireland’s best-known singers and featuring some of the country’s finest traditional musicians are looking forward to their return to St Ives five years after travel delays resulted in a hectic car dash which saw them arrive arrive less than 15 minutes before they were due on stage.

Their bouzouki player Michael Holmes said: “Our last visit to St Ives was an all too fleeting visit thanks to a delayed flight!

“Both myself and the band are hoping to have more time to savour the beauty of Cornwall and looking forward to a great show at The Guildhall.”

St Ives September Festival chairman Mary English added: “Massive congratulations to Dervish on winning such a highly-regarded award. We’re looking forward to welcoming them back to St Ives for another great night at The Guildhall.”
